About 45 minutes northeast of Hillside, CO, is the Royal Gorge region, featuring dozens of its own hiking trails and natural attractions.
Although the neighboring towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff are small in terms of population, they offer larger-than-life views and plenty of family friendly events to go along with them.
Built along the Arkansas River, Salida and Buena Vista are perfect bail-out points after spending time on the water. The highlight of the summer season in Salida is the FIBArk festival in June, which is billed as “America’s oldest and boldest whitewater festival."
The stunning San Isabel National Forest is a true gem — even among Colorado’s plentiful national forests! The trails make for desirable destinations year-round, whether you want to use snowshoes, cross-country skis or hiking boots.
Don’t forget to bring your bike. Hillside is close to many great trails for the mountain bike enthusiast. Places like Music Pass, Crystal Falls, and Horn Creek are all within a hour drive from Hillside.
For those who are hikers at heart, Southern Colorado is truly a dream destination. With terrain ranging from prominent fourteeners to deep gorges and everything in between, the biggest challenge is simply prioritizing what hikes to attempt.
Ski or Snowboard? Monarch Mountain is an hour away from Hillside. Bring your own gear or rent from many of the rental shops near Salida or the rental shop at Monarch.
If you are looking for a fun filled family adventure, look no further. White water rafting is plentiful in the area and multiple companies do guided trips.
